Skills College of Technology has been involved in engineering education for the past 17 years delivering technical & technology programs of the UK’s Royal Chartered awarding body City & Guilds and the UK’s largest awarding body Pearson. Last year Skills College of Technology established a collaborative partnership with the De Montfort University to deliver the final year top-up degree programs of three disciplines. In these three disciplines, the City & Guilds level 5 and Pearson BTEC HND offered at the Skills College of Technology have been fully mapped to the first two years of the De Montfort University BEng (Hons) degrees, enabling the qualifiers to enter the final year top up degree programs conducted at the College. The mapped qualifications are; BEng (Hons) in Construction & Built Environment, BEng (Hons) in Electrical & Electronics Engineering, and BEng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering. Reputed Sri Lankan technology qualifications, such as NDT, HNDE & NDES programs of the same disciplines too have been mapped with these De Montfort University top-up degrees, and have been made eligible entry qualifications. The management also announced that from September 2020, three De Montfort University full time three-year programs will be inaugurated for Advanced Level completers leading to BSc (Hons) in Artificial Intelligence, BEng (Hons) in Mechatronics and BEng (Hons) in Electrical & Electronics. The full time BSc (Hons) in Artificial Intelligence will be a first in Sri Lanka, and will be delivered through a special purpose institution ICAI – the Institute of Computing & Artificial Intelligence, established within the College. The ICAI will act as a link between industry and the academia, and will ensure the relevance of the degree offered with the industry needs. It also hopes to work closely with the Institute of Artificial Intelligence of the De Montfort University to enable international academic and professional engagement in AI based project opportunities, both local and overseas.
